The death, last week, of a member has forced the House of Representatives to adjourn proceedings including the deferment, until Wednesday, of the consideration of the 2016 budget laid on the floor of the chamber.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin had laid the report on the floor of the parliament.
The demise of Musa Baba Onwana from Nasarawa state also stalled the presentation and adoption of the conference report on the 2016-2018 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The MTEF and FSP was passed by the House on Thursday, 17 December, 2015 and transmitted to the Senate for concurrence. The Senate passed same with some differences.
However, the two chambers met in a conference and adopted a harmonized version of the report which was slated for adoption today.
Meanwhile, both items were listed on the House Order paper for consideration on the floor of the chamber yesterday.
The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara who presided over the session yesterday said the House only received the 2016 appropriation “because of overriding national interest.”
Dogara said, “Today is really a sad day for us but because of the overriding interest of the country, which of course is the budget, we will take only one item and we adjourn sitting till Wednesday.”
The House in line with its tradition to accord respect to its departed colleague, prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of their member as well as the deceased family.
